The Lake Tahoe Region supports a diverse array of plants. Over 1,000 vascular plants and at least 115 species of non-vascular plants have been confirmed, with another 360 species potentially occurring. Many plants in the Tahoe Region are found in few other places on earth. Protection of these unique plants is of utmost importance for conserving the Region's biodiversity. These unique plant species are under threat from climate change and recreation impacts. Programs such as fencing around sensitive plants near recreation areas aim to protect the Region's sensitive plant species.
