The stationary watercraft standard measures noise originating from motorized watercraft that are docked at a specialized testing site. The standard allows a maximum noise level of 90 dBA Lmax from watercraft manufactured after January 1, 1993, when monitored using a microphone placed 3.3 feet from the exhaust outlet and 5 feet above the water, in accordance with procedures established by SAE International (previously known as the Society of Automotive Engineers).

The adopted single noise event threshold standards protect the quality of life for residents and visitors and reduce impacts to wildlife.

N6: Post 1992 Watercraft stationary test 90dBA Lmax

Key Points

  • The threshold standard for stationary watercraft was not evaluated due to insufficient data.
  • Limited noise monitoring resources were prioritized to noise sources that are more responsive to management actions.

  • Single noise event standards and methodologies for determining attainment are recommended for review and updating as part of the ongoing monitoring program and threshold update processes.
