The pass-by watercraft standard measures noise originating from a motorized watercraft that is operating on a calm body of water that is large enough to allow the watercraft to pass-by a designated monitoring site at cruising speed.
The standard allows a maximum noise level of 82 Lmax measured 50ft from the engine, running at 3,000 rpm. Test procedures were established by SAE International (previously known as the Society of Automotive Engineers).
The adopted single noise event threshold standards protect the quality of life for residents and visitors and reduce impacts to wildlife.
Limited noise monitoring resources were prioritized to noise sources that are more responsive to management actions.
